Meet-a-Mom: Jessica Cortez of Bloomfield Child and Family Counseling | Birmingham Bloomfield Hills Moms

Meet Jessica, owner of the Bloomfield Child & Family Counseling in Troy. Their focus is in-person individual sessions, prescribing medication, and group therapy for kids. Jessica also wrote:  The Thinking Traps: A Team of Troublesome Thoughts. Juggling it all as a mom. When she’s not helping our families health, you can find her at the pool with her family. Thank you Jessica for sharing more about your family, your business and your book!

How many children do you have and what are their names and ages?

Two children, Marcos (7) and Lilliana (4).

Where do your kids go to school?

Conant Elementary

You own Bloomfield Child & Family Counseling. Can you tell us more about your practice?

We are a therapy clinic exclusively working with children & teens. Our focus is in-person individual sessions, prescribing medication, and group therapy for kids. I opened this practice seven years ago in Troy and we have since quadrupled in size and opened a second location in West Bloomfield.

What are some of the services or specialization families can expect at Bloomfield Child & Family Counseling?

We address symptoms of general anxiety, ADHD executive functioning skills, behavioral concerns, and social emotional skills for children. In sessions, children and teens work to increase healthy communication, identifying feelings and their thoughts, and improving overall mood.

For some parents or families who are possibly scared or nervous about counseling/therapy, what advice do you have?

I recommend families see therapy as a space to process the week and learn tools for success. Your child doesn’t live in a bubble, so ge[ng support for concerns now will help with family

dynamics, social relationships, and self-esteem! Your family can even try a set number of sessions so it feels concentrated and goal-oriented rather than seeing this as a long-term process.

Tell us a fun fact about you?

I wrote a clinician workbook for children eight years ago called The Thinking Traps: A Team of Troublesome Thoughts. This focused on the cognitive distortions  that children hear and how to push those thoughts away.

When not working, what is your favorite self-care ritual?

I enjoy group workout classes for stress-release and Friday family movie nights where we pick up movie theater popcorn and Slurpees to take home.

What made you decide to raise your family here?

While I have always lived in Michigan, I have only been in Oakland County for 13 years. My husband and I fell in love with Bloomfield Hills because it feels like you’re in a more quiet, small town while being 8 minutes away from bustling Birmingham or 25 minutes from Detroit. We have been so pleased with the schools and this community.

What’s your favorite family activity to do in the summer? It’s right around the corner. 🙂

We recently joined the Birmingham Country Club so we are thrilled to be at the pool and tennis courts all summer!

What do you do to balance your own life and motherhood? What do you do for “me” time?

Juggling your own business and kids is always hard work. I make sure to schedule lunch with my girl friends during the month. It’s a perfect Ame to get away from work for an hour and connect with other working moms who understand and support one another. I truly look forward to those!

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood? I think there is a huge shoutout to the moms that have been grinding professionally and also juggle parenting day to day. When you find other moms that know the feeling of joy that comes with working professionally and also know the feeling of guilt from regularly working is special and reaffirming.
