What inspired you to start RoundAbout Kids Co.? Was there a specific moment or idea that sparked the creation of this classically rooted outerwear company for kids?
RoundAbout was inspired by my experience as a mom and a love of timeless, well-made clothing. Prior to the world shutting down in 2020, I assisted a friend in starting her children’s boutique, which sourced beautiful collections from around the world. It was an amazing year of learning, much of which was about the founders of these brands themselves. In addition to most of them being women, many of them were mothers who found a unique space in the market and created something beautiful. Shortly after, while pregnant with Jamie, I began going through some of my favorite pieces his sisters wore (especially coats) and not really finding anything neutral enough to pass down to him. That was when I reflected on these founders’ stories and the idea for the Jamie Jacket was born.
As a mom, how did your own experiences influence the design and style of the outerwear?
I’m sure many parents can agree that when you live in Michigan, quality outerwear is so important. I realized I was much more thoughtful when it came to the coats I was buying for my kids and more willing to spend a premium price for good quality. When I started sketching the design for the Jamie Jacket, I really wanted to create something that was multipurpose and well-made. I was tired of feeling like I needed a different jacket for each activity. There had to be a way to streamline a design suitable for whatever the day may bring whether it be parks, puddles, picnics or play. I worked hard to combine the look and feel of a field jacket, a barn coat and a rain jacket into one so customers could truly get the most from their investment. I also wanted to see my personal style reflected in the design. Some women love bags, others shoes. I love coats. I think it stems from my mother’s assortment of beautiful, classic coats she built over time. I looked to some of my own favorite pieces as well- a waxed Barbour jacket, a wool peacoat and a military style jacket. The common thread being their timeless silhouettes that will never go out of style. I knew right then that one of the pillars for RoundAbout would be creating designs that connect us. Working to bridge the gap between adult and child fashion through heirloom quality outerwear built to last.
What makes your outerwear stand out from other brands in the children’s clothing industry?
I would say the most obvious stand-out feature of the Jamie Jacket are its interchangeable cuffs. I love a rolled-up look and the cuffs celebrate this design element as a standing feature. Despite each colorway being neutral and easy to hand down which is essential to the brand, the cuffs make the jacket fun. Each jacket comes with a set of cuffs providing a custom look and the element of choice for kids which can make all the difference. It’s always been important to my daughter Emi to put her personal spin on what she’s wearing. She loves choosing her cuff kit for her Jamie Jacket, often mixing and matching the patterns. I realized giving children even the smallest say in what they wear can have such an empowering effect on them.
Cuffs are often the dirtiest part of a child’s jacket as well so it’s really nice to simply detach the cuffs and throw them in the wash, sparing the jacket a wash cycle. The Jamie Jacket can be worn with and without cuffs too, it looks great either way!
Do your kids play a role in your creative process? How have they influenced the designs or business decisions?
My kids have absolutely played a role in the creative process. I considered some of their favorite fabric patterns and colors all three of them gravitate to when deciding the colorways for our first collection. I also asked that my daughters be brutally honest on whether or not they’d wear the Jamie Jacket. Having their stamps of approval meant everything (although I’d be lying if I said they didn’t want a pink option, which may be in the works). And because they’re kids, it was crucial that I source safe, quality materials. The Jamie Jacket is ethically and sustainably made in small batches and is free of fluorocarbons (PFAS).
How did you come up with the name “RoundAbout Kids Co.”? Is there a story behind it?
There actually is! I grew up in Connecticut and there was the best consignment store in my town named Roundabout. I loved perusing their meticulously curated selection of clothing and accessories. I realized then how cyclical fashion is and that the best items tell a story. That core, heirloom pieces can have a place in our closets forever and be passed down.
My hope is to build RoundAbout Kids Co. into something that feels like a heritage brand. Offering numerous outerwear styles that stand the test of time and withstand numerous children and countless memories and adventures.
Tell us a fun fact about you.
I actually don’t have a background in fashion design! I majored in communication and studio art at Denison University. I dreamed of a career in advertising, but eventually my path led to nonprofit development. I loved the social aspect of nonprofit, getting to know donors and finding ideal giving opportunities for them. I also loved creating and realized later in life that my desire to be creative was something I just couldn’t ignore. The steady process of establishing RoundAbout has checked so many boxes for me and has opened up such an exciting new world. My background in nonprofit is still something I hold very close to my heart. With every Jamie Jacket purchase, RoundAbout will make a donation to the Outdoor Alliance for Kids (OAK) an organization working to give every child equitable access to the outdoors.
I can’t stress enough to other mothers out there to take a minute to reflect on just how much they are doing. Motherhood is such a layered journey teaching us both about our children AND ourselves. Raising good humans is no easy task and so many ideas can be born out of what we do. Don’t be afraid to explore bringing an idea to life. You will be surprised by how many resources are available and people who will support you along the way. Businesses big and small are truly at our fingertips.
What are you most looking forward to this fall with your family?
I’m careful not to wish away the short Michigan summer, but I love the routine of fall. Visiting nearby cider mills like Franklin and Yates are favorites of ours. Soccer season is also in full swing so we’ll be running around from field to field to watch each of our kids play. Lastly, my sister is getting married in Vermont in October so I’m excited to celebrate and see family and friends. I have a feeling my favorite season is going to fly by this year!
