Thank you for opening up and sharing your life and passion for therapy with us.

Where do your kids go to school?
They attend an elementary school in Utica Community Schools; First grade and preschool
We stay very busy with swimming, soccer, library visits, play dates… all the things

Could you tell us a bit about your background and Wright Counseling?
I have been counseling children and families for over 12 years, starting my career working with children with Autism and supporting their parents, post diagnosis. I have continued to work closely with parents and caregivers throughout the years to cope with the stressors of the ever-changing role as a parent, including parents of children with a wide variety of concerns, such as anxiety and challenging behaviors. I am the clinical manager at TWC, overseeing interns and providing staff with continuing education to meet the needs of the clients we serve.
What unique approach does The Wright Counseling take in supporting families, and how do you tailor your services to meet their diverse needs?
TWC is client focused, meaning we show up to meet the needs of each client / family system where they are at, to help them get where they want to be. We have clinicians within our team that can meet our clients wherever they are throughout the lifespan. We work with individuals and families systems, including individual therapy, couples counseling, parenting support and through our testing and assessment program.
What advice would you offer to fellow moms who may be struggling to prioritize their mental health while juggling various responsibilities?
It is very important to set boundaries and engage in behavior and communication that aligns with your values – TWC offers workshops and individual work to focus on these skills. Self-care, mindfulness and doing your own internal work can also help with balancing daily life, while modeling the values and skills you want to impart on your kids.
Looking ahead, what are your hopes and aspirations for The Wright Counseling, and how do you envision continuing to make a difference in the lives of families?
We are hopeful that through serving our communities, we can help break the cycle of mental health stigma so people can receive the support they need to improve their lives. We hope to help families understand that children exist within a family system and that the system as a whole needs to grow too, it’s not just the child’s job. We want to provide support and education to help foster growth and connection.
What role does communication play in family therapy, and how do you help families improve it?
Communication is an essential component when working in therapy. First, there needs to be good communication between client and therapist. Next, the therapist can help the client develop communication skills to have more vulnerable and authentic conversations. Improvement is made when the family is discussing things with safety and love. It is important for children to have a voice, to be seen and to feel important in their system that can nurture their individuality and uniqueness.

What advice would you give to families considering therapy for the first time?
Going to therapy for the first time can be a vulnerable experience. Have compassion for yourself and your family, be clear about goals and what you are hoping to gain, and be honest. Our jobs as counselors are not about fixing anything, but to hold space for you to grow into your greatest potential.
This interview offers a glimpse into the heart and soul of one of the moms with The Wright Counseling, a beacon of hope and healing for families. Through their dedication and passion, they exemplify the transformative power of therapy in fostering stronger, healthier relationships within families.
