Tell us a little bit about yourself! How many kids do you have and what do you love most about being a mom?
I have three children. My oldest daughter, Parker, turns 21 in October and is a senior at Michigan State. My son, Brooks, turns 19 in October and joined his sister at MSU this year as a freshman. My youngest, Reese, is 13 and an eighth grader at Holy Name.
What I love most about being a mom is the pure joy and perspective my children bring into my life. They remind me to slow down, be present, and celebrate the little things. Watching them grow, discover the world, and become their own unique people is the most rewarding experience. It keeps me grounded and inspired in everything I do. With my two oldest away at school, I like to FaceTime them to catch up as much as possible (probably way more than they’d like!).

•What does a typical day look like for you balancing motherhood and running a business?
For me, balance is less about perfection and more about presence. I begin my mornings with quiet rituals like walking my dog, journaling, or practicing yoga, which ground me before the day unfolds. Once my youngest is off to school, I shift into business mode with focus and intention, making the most of my work hours so I can be fully present at home later. Evenings are reserved for family, whether it’s homework, activities, or simply sitting down to dinner together. Of course, there are unexpected twists along the way, but I’ve learned that embracing flexibility is just as important as having structure. What keeps me centered is knowing that both roles, motherhood and entrepreneurship, fuel each other and make me stronger in both.
Can you share what inspired you to start Benny’s Eye Wear
When I first needed readers, I was surprised by how limited the options were. Everything felt either cheaply made or prohibitively expensive (designer frames that cost hundreds of dollars before even adding custom lenses). I wanted something different: eyewear that was beautifully designed, impeccably crafted, and fitted with optical-grade lenses worthy of daily use. When I couldn’t find it, I realized there was a real gap in the market. That’s when I set out to create what I wished existed myself—luxury readers made in Italy that blend exceptional quality with timeless, fashion-forward style.

What makes your business unique or special compared to others in the area?
Benny’s is the only ready-made reading glasses brand on the market that are handmade in Italy. Also, all our styles are named after someone special or a place I love. Obviously, we have a Parker, Brooks and Elliot (my youngest’s middle name).
What’s one challenge you’ve faced as a mom entrepreneur, and how have you overcome it?
There have been so many challenges! Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. One of the biggest challenges has been building brand awareness as a startup. We do a lot of influencer outreach and sent readers to Selma Blair. As a result, we’re doing a collaboration with her because she loved the glasses so much. Look for Selma x Benny’s early next year!
Do your kids ever get involved or inspire parts of your business?
Do they ever! They have been involved every step of the way: doing inventory, shipping, organizing, working events, making boxes, the list goes on and on. My oldest daughter has gone to market with me in Dallas, driven to upstate New York to work Field+Supply, and helped with pop ups. All three have been willing to pitch in and help. When our first shipment arrived from Italy, one of my daughters said “Mom, do you know how many people say they are going to do something and then never do it? You did it, and it’s amazing!”. Year made.

How do you unwind or carve out time for yourself?
I love spending time outdoors and walking in nature—it helps me feel grounded and centered. Yoga and meditation are also important practices for me. I make it a priority to carve out ‘me time’ each morning, rising early to drink warm water, journal, and walk my dog before the day begins.
Is there a local mom-owned business you love to support?
Sue Fuller, founder of Oliver Thomas (www.theoliverthomas.com) and Birmingham local, has been an incredible friend and invaluable resource. She’s not only successful and intelligent but also endlessly fun to be around. Sue is always generous with her time – willing to brainstorm, share insights, and serve as a trusted sounding board.
Coffee or tea?
I never drink coffee, only hot tea (preferably chamomile).
Favorite family tradition?
My favorite family tradition revolves around traveling. When my kids turn eight, I take them to New York City for the first time, just the two of us. When they turn 13, they can choose anywhere in the world they want to visit, and we plan the perfect adventure. My 13-year-old has chosen Iceland, and I’m thrilled to make lifelong memories with her in such a special place.
